Dogs, cats and ferrets: EU Pet Passport

Dogs, cats and ferrets that travel in EU must:

  1. Have a microchip
  2. Be rabies vaccinated (find the countries where rabies is still spreading and important information about this disease)
  3. Depending on the country of departure, have undergone a serum titration of rabies antibodies, confirming the effectiveness of the vaccine (find more information about the vaccination conditions for entering France with a pet)
  4. In the case of some countries, be treated against echinococcosis
  5. Hold a valid EU passport

Only the animals mentioned above are eligible for the EU passport which is valid in the 27 EU countries and Norway. A valid EU passport for your pet can also be delivered in the following countries:

  1. Andorra
  2. Faroe Islands
  3. Gibraltar
  4. Greenland
  5. Iceland
  6. Lichtenstein
  7. Monaco
  8. Norway
  9. Saint-Marinus
  10. Switzerland
  11. Vatican City State

This passport must be created by a vet, except if your pet was identified by tattoo before July 3rd 2011.

For pets from outside EU: the health certificate

The health certificate applies for dogs, cats, ferrets, that travel within the EU in a non-European country. It can also apply to other pets, such as birds. You can find more information about specific regulations for each pet.

Some special cases for travelling with a pet in Europe

Specific restrictions apply in the following cases:

  1. Pets travelling without their owners
  2. People travelling with more than 5 pets
  3. Pets other than dogs, cats and ferrets (in these cases, regulations depend on the country)
