Italian is an official language of Italy and San Marino and is spoken fluently by the majority of the countries’ populations. It’s also an official language in Switzerland, together with French, German and Romansch. Concentrated in the south of the country, and with around 0.5 million Swiss speakers, Italian is the third most spoken language in Switzerland. Italian is also used in administration and official documents in Vatican City, and is a recognised minority language in seven other countries in Europe and North Africa.

In total, Italian is spoken by about 64 million people as a first language, and about 20 million as a second language. Like French and Spanish, Italian is a Romance language, which originally evolved from Latin; unsurprisingly, it’s now Latin’s closest living relative.

Italy’s largest economic partners are mainly located in Europe, with the UK being its 5th largest export partner. Its main economic strengths are tourism and manufacturing, both international sectors which frequently require translation services. The country imports large amounts of raw materials, petroleum, chemicals, transport equipment, metals, food, textiles and clothing.

Did you know? Football fans are called Tifosi in Italian – which literally means “carrier of typhoid”! The name comes from Italian football fans’ wild, feverish behaviour at matches.
