What is it like to live abroad?

Many people in their lives have the opportunity to move to another country either temporarily for a few months or permanently. Living abroad can be frightening; it is rather daunting to move your entire life to another country, especially one where the language is different to your own. In spite of this however, living abroad even for a short period of time can be a very rewarding experience.

A different way of living

Each country has its own distinct and individual culture, cuisine and lifestyle. Therefore, when you move to another country, you will indeed have to adapt to a different way of living. For example, this could be getting used to different weather; perhaps it is much warmer in your destination country or perhaps colder and so you must adapt. Or, it could be a different style of meal such as in Italy where meals consist of antipasto, primo piatto, secondo piatto and a dessert. Whatever the differences may be between your country of origin and your destination, it is important you try to adapt to the new way of living in order to truly have an authentic and rewarding experience.

A new language

One of the biggest challenges you will face when moving abroad is if you do not speak the language of the country you are moving to. For example, you may come from the USA and speak English but are planning on moving to France where they only speak French. In this way, you should endeavour to embrace this new language and learn it as much as you can. It is inevitable that being familiar with the language will help you to adapt more easily and feel more comfortable and at home in the new country. It can be very difficult indeed to live in another country without learning its language. Speaking even a little of the language will allow you to engage with the locals and make friends, all which in turn will enhance your experience.

A changed worldview

It must be pointed out that living abroad and learning to get by in another country will change your mindset and how you view the world. You will not be the same person you were before you left. Experiencing other cultures and interacting with new people will undoubtedly open up your mind to view the world in a completely different way. You will learn to appreciate the nuances of your own lifestyle in your home country and also come to realise that other people may do some things better. Indeed, you will benefit from an increased awe and respect for people all over the globe that will change your worldview and how you live your life.

Ultimately, moving abroad can be daunting and you will be faced with any number of challenges and problems to solve. A language barrier can often put you in awkward and embarrassing situations. Not being familiar with cultural norms could make you appear ignorant. However, living and experiencing life in another country is something that will expand your mind and foster a deep appreciation for the lives of others. Indeed, it is an experience that will change your life for the better.
